Team News & Tactical Brief :

AC Milan

With six wins in their last seven league games, Rossoneri will like to build on to their new-found momentum after an indifferent start to the season. The visitors have not won over Genoa while travelling for last three seasons. The last time Milan beat the hosts at their own den was way back in the 2007-08 season where an authoritative performance from Milan’s then icon Kaka sealed all three points to the joy of the travelling fans.

More than the wins, it is the flair with which Milan are winning this season, is making the world take notice of a resurgent, freshened up Rossoneri outfit under Massimiliano Allegri. The latest 4-0 victory over Chievo only solidified the statement of inter for Milan this season and breaking the Luigi Ferraris jinx at this point will only further Milan’s reputation as the team with the strongest bid at retaining the title.

Milan’s first choice custodian Christian Abbiati has been ruled out for any first team action for two weeks which means Marco Amelia will start a second straight game after managing a clean sheet at home last weekend. Mario Yepes will continue to fill into Nesta’s shoes partnering Thiago Silva who scored a splendid goal against Chievo. Club’s gesture to honour Silva with the armband elevated the Brazilian’s game to a different pedestal altogether which was much on show. Ignazio Abate will take his usual position on the right whereas Gianluca Zambrotta is expected to find some playing time on the left after neither of Antonini and Taiwo have so far been able to particularly impress.

Allegri should retain the midfield trio of Aquilani, van Bommel and Nocerino from the last game whereas the attack will continue to be led by Ibrahimovic and Pato with Boateng fielding right behind them in the hole. Robinho may be offered some playing time in the second half but it is very important for Allegri to keep El Sharrawy in his scheme of things, especially after the rumours of his departure from the club in January have hit the media.

Genoa :

The last weekend was not particularly impressive for the hosts as they went down 2-0 to Cesena, who are perhaps witnessing their worst run of form ever since making a comeback to the top flight last season. On the positive front however, is the stat that reads an immaculate home record for Genoa this season. The Rossoblu are yet to be conquered at home and should leave no stone unturned to maintain this form when they welcome Max Allegri’s men in form.

Alberto Malesani is in a tricky situation going into this game considering the list of unavailable players owing to reasons varying from prolonged injuries to suspension. Argentine forward Rodrigo Palacio has been a key component of the side but he will be serving a suspension and hence will not be available for selection whereas Ze Eduardo, Cesare Bovo and Luca Antonelli are all nursing injuries.

In his favoured 3-5-2 formation, Malesani will start with caution against the prolific Milanese attack with three-man guarding the heart of Genoa defence. Alongside club veterans Dario Danielli and Emiliano Moretti, the former Rossonero Kakha Kaladze will take guard in the centre defence. Club captain Giandomenico Mesto and the Guinean youngster Kevin Constant should flank them, albeit in fairly advanced positions. Skipper Marco Rossi and Portuguese midfielder Miguel Veloso have been two of the better performers for the hosts this season and are very crucial to orchestrate the play from the middle of the park.

Milan youth prodigy Alexander Merkel will start in a more advanced position, feeding the two forwards Andrea Caracciolo and Bosko Jankovic – The Serbian will have to play out of position to maintain the shape in absence of Palacio.

Genoa have so far demonstrated all the tendency of a typical mid-table club and have enjoyed the benefits aplenty. Victories over both the Roman sides have done their confidence a world of good playing at home and in all probabilities, Malesani will instruct his boys to sit deep, stay alert at the high pressing Milan midfield and hit back only on counter.

  1. Genoa is very hardworking side these days and also can create problems for the teams like Inter Milan, Ac Milan, Juventus and like As Roma, there are also competitive side like these like Palermo and Napoli.
