Gen Masud resign of foreign ministry

The government has withdrawn Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury from the foreign ministry in a shake-up that saw several other changes.

A public administration ministry statement on Wednesday said Gen Masud, a former coordinator of military-controlled caretaker government's anti-corruption drive, was attached to the Armed Forces Division.

Gen Masud was appointed high commissioner to Australia on Sept 3, 2008.

In the same order, Anti-Corruption Commission director general (administration) Col Hanif Iqbal was also withdrawn.

Gen Masud was attached to the foreign ministry from the National Defence College on June 8, 2008 in what is believed to be a power struggle with former army chief General Moeen U Ahmed who was catapulted into helms of affairs of the state on Jan 11, 2007.

Six days earlier on June 2, he was sent to the NDC from the Armed Forces Division where he had been its principal staff officer, as Gen Moeen reportedly purged 1/11 key players to consolidate his power.

Brother-in-law of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's brother, retired major Sayeed Iskander, Gen Masud was in charge of the 9th Infantry Division in Savar when emergency rules were clamped.

He was then appointed as the chief coordinator of the National Coordination Committee on serious crimes and corruption (NCC) and later promoted from major general to lieutenant general.

When Khaleda returned to power in 2001, General Masud, then a brigadier general, was made head of the Counter-Intelligence Bureau at the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).

According to the public administration ministry statement, director of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital Brig Gen Ashraful Alam Siddique was withdrawn to Armed Forces Division. He has been replaced by Brig Gen Abdus Sabur.

The contract of deputy director of primary education directorate Shahana Begum, who was appointed to the post for one year on June 10 last year, was extended by one year. The new contract took retroactive effect from June 14.

Senior consultant (eye) of Shahid Suhrawardi Medical College Dr Sirajul Islam Molla will continue with his job on contract for the next two years, which will come into force from July 6. [source bdnews24]
